Day 42

Well the calanques were absolutely phenomenal. It seems so long ago that we were there though. We spent 4 nights in Cassis; two of which were spent at the beach, and two of which we're spent hiking the calanques.

Cassis is like a smaller, less touristy version of Nice, and consists of a lovely little port, some posh restaurants and a really nice beach.

After picking up some books in Marseille, the days spent at the beach were spent reading and relaxing in the sun, the days after however could not have been more different!

We visited the calanques on two days, it took us about 40 minutes to cycle there up and down over the well... mountains. I don't think I have ever sweat as much or been so out of breath in my life. When we reached the calanques, we hiked to the first one; Port pin. We spent the entire day sitting and jumping off the rocks and swimming in the bluest water I've ever seen.

It felt amazing jumping into the water after such a sweaty travel to get there.

The day after, we decided to visit the calanques again, after we had such a great day there the day before. The weather was not as good, but this helped us hike up the mountain with ease. We then decided to push ourselves a little further, and hiked to the next Calanque which was a mountain away. The views were amazing on the way there, but the Calanque itself was full of hikers who had also completed the trail we had, and so we made the decision to hike back and settle at the first Calanque for the day.

After an amazing couple of days in Cassis, we travelled up north again towards the gorge du verdon. This was a sight me and Tom had been particularly looking forward to, and it did not disappoint. We stayed overnight at an aire right by the man made Lake Sainte-Croix for 2 nights, which was only a couple of kilometres away from the gorge du verdon. We woke up early on Friday and decided to push the camper up the mountain to see the gorge from the top, it just about made it, but we didn't want to push our luck, so we headed back down to hire a pedalo for the afternoon to explore the verdon river.

The colour of the water in the gorge was amazing, it was a mix between a light turquoise in some places and sky blue in others. It was so beautiful.

After we visited the gorge, we travelled down south again towards Cannes, we stopped with a lot of other campers on a little side road but were awoken around 5am by shouting, we were obviously a little taken a back as the area seemed so nice but went back to sleep. As we were parked so close to a supermarket, I thought that I would pop to the shops in the morning, I dragged tom along with me and we promptly found the source of the noise; the biggest car boot I had ever laid eyes upon. My inner scouse was rather excited, and even tom enjoyed it. We both picked up some bargains and it provided a great spontaneous activity for the day.

Today, we are going into Nice, as we have found a free aire just a bus ride away! Hopefully the weather will stay good. After that, we move onto Italy. I'm excited for the pasta and pizza, but not so much for the tiny roads and careless drivers. We shall have to see how it turns out!
